Not necessarily. If you have a newer PC, software encoders work very well. Software encoders rely on the power of the PC to encode your video, so the faster your PC is, the better the results. Hardware encoders are less reliant on the PC, since encoding of the video is done in the encoder chip, so you can use PCs that are slower.
