My PX-880SA stopped functioning properly today. The disc tray will not open on it's own. I can open the tray with a paper clip and insert a disc however the drive will immediately reopen. I have tried movies, games and DVDRWs and none of them work.
I tried updating to firmware ver 1.13 and it did not change the issue.
So 2 things could be happening here, there could be a software that is running in the background which is restricting access to the drive or it could be the drive itself. Try disconnecting the SATA cable from the drive so that only the power is connected. Are you able to use the eject button? Does the tray function normally? If no, you may want to check the drive itself. Remove the bezel and see if it helps. Also, double check the mounting screws, if they are too long, they can interfere with the tray mechanism.
You may also want to check to see if the rubber "load belt" has not broken. This just happened to my drive and it's less than 6 mo. old. I found a place that carries the belts www.studiosoundelectronics.com/belts.htm#SBS. I ordered 5 of the "SBO3.7 - Square Belt - Other" since I have two of these drives I may be able to keep them running for a couple bucks
My Plextor PX-880 suddenly stopped opening the tray door. I disconnected the cables and removed all of the covers, testing the ops all the way. It was not until I removed the top inner cover, when the drawer began to work, freely.
I cannot understand what it is about that cover, which causes the drawer to lock up. One thing I did notice is that when the cover is on and the drawer is trying to open, the mechanism which lowers the spindle etc. (before the tray comes out) gets stuck. If the cover is raised a little, sometimes it will work. It is, definitely, a mechanical problem.
Has anyone determined what is going on and how to correct this problem?
